Savin Rock Marathon: A Coastal Connecticut Challenge

Nestled in the charming town of West Haven, Connecticut, the Savin Rock Marathon offers runners a unique opportunity to experience coastal beauty, small-town charm, and a course that blends flat, scenic stretches with challenging hills. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or new to long-distance running, this race is an excellent way to enjoy the picturesque New England shoreline while testing your endurance. With a welcoming community atmosphere, well-marked courses, and a mix of natural and urban scenery, the Savin Rock Marathon is a memorable event for runners of all levels.

Highlights of the Savin Rock Marathon

  • Coastal Scenery Meets Urban Charm: The Savin Rock Marathon starts and finishes along the beautiful Long Island Sound, where runners are treated to stunning ocean views and the soothing sounds of the waves. The course features a mix of waterfront paths and urban streets, offering both tranquil and dynamic running experiences. You’ll enjoy the scenic contrast of coastal serenity and the energy of the town, making every mile unique and engaging.

  • Flexible Distance Options: While the marathon is the centerpiece of the event, the Savin Rock race also offers half marathons and shorter distances, making it accessible to runners of all skill levels. Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or looking for a more relaxed run, there’s a distance that suits your goals. The two-loop marathon course is especially great for those who enjoy revisiting familiar stretches.

  • A Supportive Community Atmosphere: From volunteers and race staff to fellow runners and local spectators, the Savin Rock Marathon fosters a warm and encouraging environment. The race starts and ends near the beach, where the finish line buzzes with excitement and camaraderie. It’s an event that brings people together to celebrate the joy of running and the beauty of the Connecticut coastline.

  • Great Swag and Organization: Participants rave about the quality of the race swag, including bright and functional tech shirts and unique medals that commemorate the event. The course is well-marked, with strategically placed aid stations offering water, Gatorade, and energy gels. The organization ensures a smooth race day, allowing runners to focus on their performance and the experience.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Hilly Sections: The course features several steep hills, particularly in the middle sections of the race. While these provide a good challenge for experienced runners, they might be intimidating for beginners. However, the downhill stretches and flat coastal finish help balance out the effort.

  • Open Roads: Parts of the course are run on open roads with traffic, requiring runners to stay alert. While volunteers and police officers are stationed at key intersections to ensure safety, paying attention to your surroundings is essential. This adds a layer of complexity but also showcases the charm of running through an active town.

  • Double-Loop Format: The marathon’s double-loop structure means runners will revisit the same terrain twice. While some appreciate the familiarity and pacing benefits, others might prefer a single-loop course. It’s a matter of personal preference and mental strategy.

Whether you’re checking off Connecticut in a 50-state quest or looking for a local race with character, the Savin Rock Marathon is worth lacing up for. Sign up today and take on a course that’s as scenic as it is challenging. See you at the starting line!

The race director was a tool

This was my 50th marathon. In my experience, race directors are usually salt of the earth, incredible people who do way too much work for way too little praise. This is not the case for the this race. The race director was a huge tool. Every aspect of the course was evidence of poor planning. No restrooms on the course, bad mile markers, no garbage cans at water stations, few water stops, lots of un-patrolled intersections, and I probably could go on. He was also sarcastic, unhelpful, and petty when registering.

Decent race

A pretty good marathon. I threw my back out at work about a week before the race so was just happy to finish. Easy packet pickup morning of race, easy parking near start Chilly at start of race. Starting point by the water was pretty Course had many rolling hills, not the most difficult course I've done, but certainly not an easy one Some do not like 2 loop courses, but I don't mind them I liked the medal Not too much crowd support, not much fanfare at finish.food at finish line not spectacular Being from Ohio, I enjoyed driving around and checking out the Yale campus after the race.

Nice cheap marathon if you live in NYC area

This is a challenging course. 8 steep and 1 moderate hill between 4 and 9 miles. Flat or rolling otherwise. Repeat twice. Not impossible. My only course complaint was that they probably could have chosen an out and back in the 5th mile that didn't involve going up and down a steep hill. The RD should consider delaying the start for 30 minutes. This would allow NYC residents to reach the race on the first train w/o needing a hotel. This was the 6th running of the half marathon. The RD should know where to place the mile markers by now. They were consistently off and were useless for pacing. Even the 26M marker was closer to 550 yards from the finish line than 385 yards. This was my biggest complaint. Still, I'll probably do it again.
