From its scenic course to the enthusiastic support of volunteers and spectators, this event offers something special for runners of all levels. Whether you're tackling the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, or enjoying the family-friendly atmosphere, you’ll leave with memories to cherish and stories to tell.

A Scenic and Diverse Course Runners are treated to a picturesque and surprising course that winds through the heart of Bakersfield. While the city may be known for its oil fields and flatlands, this marathon reveals hidden gems. The route takes participants past historic neighborhoods lined with century-old trees, alongside the rushing Kern River, and even through the unique grounds of the Kern County Museum. The course blends urban and natural scenery, giving runners a well-rounded experience that highlights Bakersfield's rich character.

A standout feature of the marathon is the breathtaking Panorama Bluffs, offering stunning views and a rewarding challenge. The initial uphill segment is followed by a long downhill stretch, giving participants a chance to recover and enjoy the landscape. This mix of terrain keeps things exciting and ensures there’s never a dull moment.

Community Spirit and Exceptional Support The heart of the Bakersfield Marathon lies in the people. The community's involvement is remarkable, with dedicated volunteers, cheerful spectators, and friendly police officers cheering runners along the way. Aid stations are frequent and well-stocked, and the finish line is buzzing with energy and celebration.

Runners have consistently praised the top-notch organization of the event. From packet pickup to race-day logistics, everything runs smoothly, creating a stress-free experience. The post-race atmosphere is festive, complete with food trucks, a beer garden, and live entertainment – the perfect way to unwind after crossing the finish line.

Things to Keep in Mind (With a Positive Spin!)

  • Loud Music at the Finish Line: The start and finish lines can get lively with booming music to keep the energy high. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider bringing earplugs or stepping away from the speakers to cool down.
  • Uphill Segments: The marathon course features a significant uphill climb near Bakersfield College. Treat it as an exciting challenge and enjoy the rewarding downhill that follows.
  • Road Closures and Parking: Plan ahead to navigate potential road closures near the start line. Arriving early ensures a hassle-free experience and leaves time to soak in the pre-race atmosphere.
  • Limited Spectator Crowds in Some Areas: While downtown and residential sections buzz with excitement, parts of the course may be quieter. Use this time to focus on your stride and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

A Well Organized Event

This event held four races with 5 minutes apart to start: full, half, 10K and 5K in that order. It was about 200 runners running full in 2022. The course can be divided into three almost loop back sections. The first section is a hard up hill to a hill top, where Bakersfield College is located. Then down hill back to the town. The second section runs on a bike path along Kern River. The river runs through Bakersfield. There was some traffic congestion at the beginning of the bike path as all events cross over in this section. The third section was loop around some residential area in the town. The parking area is close to the start/finish line in Kern County Museum area. Bakersfield can be hot in summer. The race started at 7:00am with a 50 degree temperature. I finished around noontime with a 80 degree temperature. It looks that Spring season is not too hot running in Bakersfield. There were a couple of garden hose water spread stations provided by private resident in front of their house. The stations provided mist or shower upon request. There were quite a few private aid stations in front of residential houses. Most of them have water and sports drink. I saw one of them have shots! The extra aid stations are heart warming and very helpful towards the end of the run. The finish area offered free beer, burritos, live music, chairs and tables; a very friendly relax environment. A well organized local event.
