I help people figure out what business they're in...and then how to talk about it. | Positioning & Messaging | "API For US GTM" | Focused on corporate narrative and aligning messaging across brand, GTM, & product

In celebration of their one-year anniversary I'm sharing some of the investments I've made through Play Money!, an angel investment platform created by my good friends Cheryl Kellond 💎and Jill Soley. Full disclosure, I'm also an angel investor in Play Money. Their purpose in building the Play Money platform is to democratize angel investing by making it easier for Angels to invest (smaller checks, easier experience) and easier for Founders to get access to what Cheryl likes to call "permissionless capital". Over the last year I've created an angel portfolio of over 20 companies. Similar to a VC, I get to create a diverse portfolio with the same money that I would have written in one check. Since it's "engagement season", the first company I'm sharing here is Cheersy, a day-of coordinator marketplace for people planning weddings looking for event planner to help them on the day of the wedding with the "gift of being a guest at your wedding." Founder Amy Shack Egan has over a decade in the wedding planning business and kept getting requests for "day of" coordination. She closed her recent pre-seed round with some pretty high profile names (see link in comments). Check them out here: https://www.cheersy.com/ And check out PlayMoney here: https://letsplaymoney.com/

Taylor-Swifting the Angel economy. Putting $10B of permissionless capital in motion at Play Money. Firing up a truckload of female badassery on the side. 3x Founder, 3x Ironman, 4x Mom. I like my 🥃 neat.

I had drinks with a hardcore group of founders in Boulder last night. 2 gnarly impact-focused fintechs, a hardware company for food packaging, and 4 really meaty software/dev tool/api type companies. No consumer. No CPG. No men.

Let's build our future and then moneyball out on the spoils!" 🤑 --------- PS: Hey The WIE Suite'ers, The Fourth Effect Fourthies, and Girl Math Capital .... if you missed my original session, feel free to join us Friday!

  • 💎 Big congrats to Emma Bates and the Diem team! We’re so excited to have played a part in Diem’s Seed+ round, helping connect them with everyday angels who brought in capital, operator expertise, and their networks to the table. Fortune picked up the news and ran a feature on how Diem is redefining social search with a fresh perspective—check it out below. Here’s to backing more visionary founders and putting money into motion for the change you want to see in the world. 💪

    co-founder + ceo, Diem | forbes 30u30 2022 | techstars NYC 2020

I’m super excited to share we closed our Seed+ round of funding for Diem and as part of that, we’ve allocated some of this raise for our community to invest on the same terms as our venture capital partners!! 💸💸 You can see the news featured in Fortune by the awesome, Emma Hinchliffe, this morning. I’m particularly proud of this fundraise, not because the market in 2024 was hard (it was very hard), but because I had to fundraise and close this round while recovering from a very bad concussion (a journey i’m still on 13 months+ post-accident!) Upon reflection, I realized I actually cannot remember a lot of the conversations I had and spent most of the raise in a huge amount of pain, with a very dimly lit B&W screen, to the point that I couldn’t see who I was talking to a lot of the time 😂 Needless to say, it was not easy. But! On the more positive side, enabling our community (in-app and beyond) to invest is something I’ve wanted to do for years—I’m a strong believer that the people helping to shape this new internet should be owners in it too. The link to co-invest is here: https://lnkd.in/e6xDG5y9 The article touches on the growth we've seen amidst the Meta Policies/TikTok band/Trump inauguration––all of which are causing people to seek alternate internet platforms that they trust to keep them and their data safe. The article also features some updates I’m really proud of that we released to the app on Inauguration Day. A few of those include: 👻 Updates to anonymous mode to protect searches looking for information on things now more at risk of subpoena (eg. reproductive health, gender affirming care, sexuality & marriage equality). 🤫 Updates to our privacy policy to reflect our company’s commitment to rigourously resisting any subpoena for a user’s personal data. We already separate identity from content in our database. 👩⚕️ Updated abortion resources in search results, including a map view of state rights and providers when asking related questions. Lots more to come here! Finally! Very excited to have welcomed some awesome new investors to Diem, including: Precursor Ventures (Charles Hudson), Alumni Ventures (Lucas Kirshenbaum Mason Hale), Swizzle Ventures (Jessica Kamada), Rogue Women's Fund (Caroline Lewis), Gaingels, Otherwise Fund (Tracy Chou) + angels including: Dan Shipper, Cheryl Kellond 💎, Jill Soley, mallory contois and more via Play Money!. Joining our long-term partners at Stellation Capital (Peter Boyce II, Rhian Horton), Acrew Capital (Maitree Mervana Parekh, Vishal Lugani), Flybridge (Chip Hazard), X-Factor Ventures (Jules Pieri) & Techstars (Jenny Fielding). Co-invest here: https://lnkd.in/e6xDG5y9 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eFybRbfM Here’s to building a more inclusive internet, together 🚀 #internet #community #searchengine #ai #socialmedia

I will help you build an MVP ✨ Product @ Hyperspace Ventures

My favorite tip from last night's call with Cheryl Kellond 💎 (founder of Play Money!) and Girl Math Capital? Back Your Besties. Writing angel checks for your friends goes beyond just "being nice". It's about strengthening relationships. It's about keeping money circulating in your community. It's about waking up and feeling excited to support someone/something you believe in. A micro check for $500-$1,000 can go a long way both for a company, and for your friendship. Cheryl shared a ton of tips when it comes to angel investing, told us about her own investments, how she does due diligence and even how she invested in tinned fish (which might turn out to be her most successful investment) 😱. Play Money is a platform that bridges the gap in angel investing by helping you build your dream startup portfolio with just about any budget. Make sure to check it out if you have thought about angel investing. --> https://letsplaymoney.com/ (PS: Cheryl's newsletters are incredible and filled with tips)

Last week I was stuck. I was looking for a side hustle to augment my startup income. The problem is, I am a generalist. I had no idea how to package my magic into something tangible. I needed something lightweight to work around my startup that was also fun & fulfilling. And just like that BANG! Milly Tamati from Generalist World 🌀 is in my feed with the best.idea.ever. A coaching/consulting model made for me. 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀✨✨ 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲-𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. Yes, it's a bit of a crazy experiment, so I am limiting it to 5 slots at an intro rate to feel things out. If you know any founders, solopreneurs, or mid-career folks ready to make moves - send them my way. What do you think? I'd love a repost to get the word out. Link in comments ofc. --- Big 🙏 to Lindsey Lerner. This is her brainchild and I riffed off of her bigtime!! #startups #generalist #founders

I started 2024 with a single question... And ended it with something totally unexpected. My question: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘧 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨? To get there we had to build a platform AND test it out with our own community. So I ended the year with something unexpected: A deep understanding of why running a syndicate sucks. 🤦🏽♀️ But along the way  • onboarded a hoard of new angels • we moved more capital than a typical first year fund manager • made "cat herding a syndicate" almost a thing of the past. 2025 is all about becoming the force multiplier for every tech-loving angel group, should-be syndicate lead, and future emerging fund manager. ____________ 👋🏽 Hi, I'm Cheryl from Play Money. We help everyday Angels build their dream startup portfolios without making investing a full time job.
