Earlier this week, my teammate shared this LinkedIn post with me from Jacie deHoop, co-founder of The Gist newsletter: |
It reminded me of my favorite celebrity newsletter, Service95 by Dua Lipa. (Which, because I am a top 0.0001% Dua fan, I have been subscribed to since 2021, thank you very much.)
It got me thinking about how this further confirms Jacie's point in her LinkedIn post. Dua Lipa and Tom Brady are some of the most famous people in the world. They have incredibly successful careers in objectively "cool" industries, being an international pop star and a professional football player, and virtually unlimited resources.
And they're choosing to... start email newsletters?
I think email, even email marketing, has the potential to feel like a more personal 1:1 conversation than social media ever can. And sure, maybe that's an opinion that has been heavily shaped by watching You've Got Mail too many times, but why else would Dua Lipa and Tom Brady choose this way to connect with fans?
|
Email is the #1 way that anyone building a business online—whether you're a superstar or a hobbyist—can truly own their audience. With your email audience, you get full control over the community you're building, without algorithms or SEO. And as you think about future-proofing your creator business, there's so much power in that.
If you haven't started building your email list yet, let this be your sign. You can start today—it's as easy as adding an email signup block to your Link in Bio, and it will take you 2 minutes tops. |
Even if you don't know yet exactly what you're going to send in your emails, that's okay. Don't overthink the content yet.
Start building your list and building up the community of fans who want to hear from you. Then, start a conversation with them—a great question to put in an automatic welcome email is, "What kind of content do you want to get from me?" |
Then you'll be off to the races, and have something in common with Dua Lipa & Tom Brady. |

With all the in-person events we have coming up in NYC around our new office location and NYFW, I’ve been thinking a lot about the value of community, and what it means to be a part of one.
Community is kind of a buzzword in the creator industry these days, with everyone from celebrities to micro-influencers putting together chat groups and forums of their fans. But it takes more than an empty space to make a community valuable.
Many of you may remember the early days when we at Beacons were making a strong push for online community spaces and efforts. We loved engaging with creators in chat forums and webinars, but in 2024 we took a step back to re-imagine what kind of community truly best serves creators in this moment.
Nowadays, our online community looks like, well, this newsletter! I am so appreciative of each and every one of you, and I really look forward to hearing your takes every week. It really does feel like a 1:1 conversation!
But I’m also excited about in-person community. There’s just something about being face-to-face that can’t be replicated. So I'm excited to continuing to build the GRORT community with all of you, AND to seeing as many of you in person as I can in the coming months.
We’ve been to Nashville, SF, and NYC already, so reply and let me know: what other cities should Beacons pop up in in 2025? |
Speaking of in-person community, you may know that the team at Beacons keeps our company culture strong in between our offsites (when we all gather as a full company in person) by hanging out together at the offices in SF, NYC, and LA.
Here are a couple of glimpses behind the scenes at our team community in recent weeks (it mostly revolves around food). |
I have major fomo obviously, because the almond croissant coffee cake is in San Francisco, and sadly I am not. |

Btw, have you ever thought, I really need to get my fix of creator-related Grammys memes?
Let me introduce you to the Beacons Instagram. We post that stuff, and other fun things. Check it out.
