June 2026

Hi friend,

18 years ago this week, Peldi shipped the first version of Balsamiq. To celebrate, I’m letting him take over the newsletter this month:

Peldi here! I launched Balsamiq in 2008. It was just me and a laptop working nights and weekends, asking family and friends what they thought. (I really almost called it WopStudio!)

It seemed useful at my then full time job but I had no idea if anyone else would want it.

You did, and you still do. Balsamiq has stayed Balsamiq for 18 years because people like you keep opening it up and designing the next idea. It's more than just me and a laptop now, and Balsamiq does more today than it did then.

The idea underneath hasn't changed one bit: get it out of your head, get it in front of people, figure it out together before you build the real thing.

So thank you!

Few software companies have the privilege of “growing up” and staying independent for this long.

In a world with even more side projects and changing workflows, I know how important it is to choose the right tools. I’m glad we keep getting to be that right tool, for so many product builders, founders, and IT leads.

I do have one small ask, if you're in the mood.

After all these years, the thing that still means the most is hearing what Balsamiq actually did for you. The project it helped you think through, the meeting it saved, the idea that started as a dream.

If you've got a minute, tell us about it:

It's a short form, takes two minutes, and lets you give us feedback too.

We'll pick a few favorites and if yours is one of them, you’ll get to choose a piece of Balsamiq swag.

Here's to the next big thing. Hopefully it’s yours!

- Peldi

Okay, Arielle again. Peldi could talk about the Balsamiq journey all day! Feel free to reply if you have more questions about it. For now, here’s the rest of your monthly recap.

🗞️ Product news:

Balsamiq AI (beta)

1️⃣ The grid is BACK! If you’ve been around for a while, you may remember our boards used to have a grid background. It’s now back by popular demand, find it in the View menu or press +'

2️⃣ Arrows are a lot smarter. They now anchor to UI elements that they touch, so you can connect elements to show user flows or diagrams. Moving an element with an attached arrow will move the arrow too.

3️⃣ Share & export is better than ever: You can access all your collaboration options in one dialog! Invite a team member, export to image or PDF, or connect to our MCP server. Check it out via:

  • the Project menu
  • the Share button in the upper-right corner
  • or press CTRL/⌘+E

💜 Happy product thoughts

Last month's piece on AI and decision-making hit a nerve, lots of you wrote back. So what's something else about designing and building products you wish more people wrote about honestly?

Hit reply, I read each one.

Until next time,

Arielle & the Balsamiq Team

P.S. We write this for people working on products. If that’s someone you know, forward away.

And if you were on the receiving end of a forward, you can subscribe here.
