There’s an elephant in the room about STEM careers and we need to address it. A common misconception is that STEM jobs are limited to the typical careers we hear about like doctors and astronauts. And that’s just not the case!
The reality is that STEM careers are everywhere, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, to choose from! Obsessed with roller coasters? You can be a roller coaster engineer! Certified foodie? Food science might be right up your alley! Although often overlooked, trade careers such as electricians and plumbers are also a key part of STEM, and their importance in the field is unmatched.
Whether you’re passionate about how things work, hands-on projects, or making new discoveries about the natural world, STEM is for you. Pursue an internship, a job, or an educational opportunity if you want to find out more about the field (pssst, you can find some great ideas in our Make STEM 100% Resource Guide!).
We’re so excited to see how you explore the vast reaches of STEM in 2023, but for now, enjoy the rest of your winter break and we’ll be back to find out WYD in the new year. Let’s Do This! DoSomething |

Hey, we know you’ve got a bright friend who would be super stoked to find out how they can start putting their passion into action in the field. Read what some of our members had to say about sharing the guide: |
“As a STEM major, I see a lot of people get discouraged easily in their STEM academic careers,” said DoSomething member Ximena C., 20. “By sharing this guide, I feel like I can inspire and motivate people to take up a STEM career by clearing up misconceptions and by keeping them informed.” |
DoSomething member Ivy T., 16 said, “Each individual field within STEM is integral to learning more about the world and ourselves through a logical and factual perspective. By sharing STEM knowledge, tools, and resources within STEM and outside of STEM, I am aiding in making STEM a more diverse and well-known area of education and expertise, all while also helping others by offering them the opportunity to learn and discover things that they might have never even imagined.”
It’s giving…”hey, I support you and totally want you to rock it in STEM.” We’re here for it. Share a resource guide today and you’ll be entered to earn a $2,000 scholarship, heyooo! |
As we’re wrapping up 2022, we wanted to share some of our favorite things that happened this year:
Endangered rhinos made their way back to Mozambique after 40 years, signaling a bright future for many species at risk of extinction in the area. Moving them from South Africa to Mozambique was the first time large endangered species had been successfully transported such a long distance, paving the way for more bold conservation efforts that could save other species from going extinct worldwide.
Scientists have discovered a way to destroy ‘forever chemicals’ with an ingredient that could decontaminate thousands of sites worldwide. Experts call the discovery “encouraging” in the fight to combat pollution. Go, science!
California plans to ban new gas-powered cars by 2025, with 17 states on board to follow. This is part of the Clean Air Act and could drastically reduce carbon emissions in the US. 2022 was all about bold solutions to climate change and this one is quite exciting! P.S. Come work with us…our team is growing in 2023! We have a handful of opportunities available and we’d looovee to see some DoSomething members become DoSomething staff! Check them out today. |
