Hiya, DoSomething members! 

It’s Election Day and we’re totally in our feels that more youth registered to vote this year compared to 2018, up to 38% more in some states. This is a huge win in ensuring our democracy becomes more inclusive and reflective of the views of young people. 

Before we get too pumped, did you vote yet? Just making sure you know that there’s still time to vote before the polls close tonight! If you haven’t hit up your local polling place, now is the time. Grab a buddy and go vote before time runs out. Even if you’re in line when the polls close, you still have the right to cast your vote!

The excitement doesn’t stop there. Early voting turnout has seen a surge of participation from people of color and young people under 30. Since many of this election’s ballot initiatives uniquely impact youth and the BIPOC community, seeing these groups turn out in higher numbers this year is proof that civic engagement really is worth the hype.

DoSomething

Our DoSomething community has totally raised the bar for what it means to be civically engaged.

Not only have DoSomething members been locking down their votes at the polls, but you all have taken an active role in getting others registered as well. Since 2018, 360,000 voters have registered through DoSomething, thanks in large part to the hard work you’ve all put in. No matter how the election turns out, we know that this is still a monumental step toward having our voices heard.

Here are a few who are taking action on causes they care about:

Gabby, 18: It is important for me to vote this November because as a young American women citizen I have a passionate belief that not only myself but multiple young women across the country have a right to make their own choices on the behalf of their own bodies. I am very passionate about the women rights that were taken away from us with the overturning of Roe v Wade and I want to make sure I do my part to elect political officials that share the same passionate beliefs as me and plan to take action to ensure the rights of all women in Nevada!

Iyriana, 21: It is important to me because this is my first time voting. I want my voice to be heard. I also think it is easier than ever especially with social media. It is important to me to have clear representation in today’s society, because I am still fighting to every single day.

That’s right, fam. Elections are just the beginning of what’s in store for the years ahead. Let’s get to it!

It’s time to celebrate… Native American Heritage Month! What better way to kick it off than highlighting Nicole Mann, who just became the first Native woman to go to space?

Speaking of trailblazers… Keeping up with the Native American Heritage Month momentum, last month, Native groups banded together to take back their stolen lands in different parts of the US. The collective action is not only a win for Native Americans but is a powerful model for climate and economic justice for all.

Save the date… Today is National STEM day, and to celebrate you can RSVP to our Make STEM 100% Panel on November 17th at 5pm EST. This virtual discussion is all about demystifying STEM and making the field more accessible and inclusive for young people. You won’t want to miss out on this one, so mark your calendar ASAP!

Did you know… that November 9th is World Kindness Day? Yes, there’s a whole day devoted to acts of kindness, though this is a reminder of the many ways that we can show more compassion and empathy the other 364 days of the year. Check out these 9 ways to celebrate tomorrow.
