Award-winning actor Mark Ruffalo The guy who plays the Hulk just went scorched earth on Gavin Newsom’s (correct, very excellent) decision to veto Scott Wiener’s (incorrect, very bad) “AI safety” bill, with hundreds of famous actors in his corner. But among the ScarJos (put an unknown voice actress out of work in an effort to malign OpenAI) and the JGLs (literally married to one of the women who fired Sam Altman), Mark is special in that he also opposes nuclear energy, all but guaranteeing our reliance on even more carbon intensive fossil fuels and rare earth metals, which he also opposes, in the name of combating 1) global warming, and 2) “environmental justice” (tl;dr, weather is racist). Okay. Setting aside the poor logic, a word on actors: in Ancient Rome, men of the stage were legally relegated to the status of
second-class citizen along with prostitutes and sex offenders. Folks, I’m feeling very old fashioned.

“America’s Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind,” says the Wall Street Journal. Their new article overflows with data: various studies are cited, social scientists quoted, and theories suggested, including “shifts away from traditional gender roles,” “declines in traditionally male-dominated industries,” and increased “feelings of aimlessness” from the pandemic. It feels like this article comes out every few years, rambles at length about “studies” and “research,” yet never attempts to articulate a deeper why. The fact is “the data” is always malleable (i.e. labor force participation could well be down because guys are seeking higher-risk opportunities like crypto and internet entrepreneurship to stay ahead of inflation), and we don’t need “studies” to reveal capital-T Truth here: the world of cohesive high-trust societies led by uncorrupted institutions no longer exists,
it’s on us to build something new, and spiritual leadership is now in the hands of the sovereign individual. Buckle the fuck up, fellas.

Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law Saturday that allows individuals to opt out of sharing their “brain data” with neurotech companies. A growing number of consumer technology products, including apps for meditation and mental health treatment, function by monitoring and recording everything that goes on in a user’s brain — music to the ears of advertisers who would love to know exactly what thoughts and emotions you’re experiencing at any given moment (quick he’s depressed, hit him with the Jack Daniel’s ad!). And while the idea of Newsom cracking down on the tech industry (aka the only thing preventing California’s descent into New Somalia) may rightfully get readers a little antsy, preventing our literal neural pathways from being mined by advertisers actually doesn’t sound so bad tbh. Maybe we draw the line at showing me ads for that thing I just casually mentioned in conversation, and not escalate
to prostituting out my hippocampus.

We’ve all had that one Zoom call where we clicked the link, the software took 5 minutes to update, we joined late, and then Zoom connected to our next door neighbor’s Samsung TV instead of just using the laptop speakers. The alternative would’ve been to just use FaceTime: it works every time, has zero frills, and takes almost no effort. Most payroll systems today are metaphorically Zoom: designed in 2015, bloated, and time consuming. Warp, on the other hand, is how payroll and compliance would work if Apple designed it: compliance is handled automatically, everything is optimized for speed (takes just 10 minutes to set up), and it’s sexy too. Consider moving to a payroll platform that values speed of execution and user
experience as much as you do.
Get started with Warp here.
