The NYT reports Elon Musk is now, to the tune of billions, the most prolific scam artist in America — or, at least an AI-generated deepfake version of him. “The videos are often eerily lifelike,” the Times warns of the clone Musk crimewave, “capturing Mr. Musk’s iconic stilted cadence and South African accent” (an apparent reference to the fact that all of these videos just sound like robots). The pitch here seems to be for legislation, or at least a come to god moment for tech, which might create some new tools for helping consumers. But? Guys. Come on lol. If there are really millions of people who believe Elon Musk has personally reached out to them with investment advice — a real anecdote the Times shares — we don’t need a new law, or a new tool. We need to fire every teacher in this country and start our schools from scratch.

Silicon Valley thoughtcrimes |
Friday, SF Standard published a 2,000+ word hit piece on Felicia Horowitz, wife of a16z’s Ben Horowitz. Her crime? Partly her association with Ben, who endorsed Trump on his podcast, partly the fact that she RT’d the endorsement, and partly, insanely, the fact that she’s black. "How the Horowitzes arrived at this point, however, is a bit of a mystery," the author wrote of the endorsement, despite the fact that Ben dedicated his entire endorsement episode to meticulously dissecting Harris’ and Trump’s likely policy, after which he ultimately, begrudgingly concluded Trump wouldn’t destroy AI, crypto, and VC, while Harris might. But the real mystery Emily seemed to struggle with was how a black person could possibly defy the stereotype she has for them in her head. This is racist, sad, and potentially cause for a thoughtcrime investigation (you’re welcome, Standard HR, will invoice you later).

At a recent Trump rally in Asheville, North Carolina, a Secret Service agent abandoned her post five minutes before Trump’s motorcade arrived. When the news broke, America was shocked to discover her excuse: she’d commandeered a side room reserved for emergencies to breastfeed her newborn, and to accompany some “family members” she’d admitted into the secure area. The agency claims it’s “examining” the incident, but while we wait on a final verdict, allow me to state the obvious. Recently postpartum or otherwise, a female bodyguard is a bit like a male wet nurse; a biologically anomalous portion of the population might technically be able to do the job — but most won’t. And that’s fine. Notwithstanding dramatically lowered standards, the agency will never achieve sex parity. Which literally doesn’t matter at all. Keep the bar high. Our politicians’ lives depend on it.

We’ve all had that one Zoom call where we clicked the link, the software took 5 minutes to update, we joined late, and then Zoom connected to our next door neighbor’s Samsung TV instead of just using the laptop speakers. The alternative would’ve been to just use FaceTime: it works every time, has zero frills, and takes almost no effort. Most payroll systems today are metaphorically Zoom: designed in 2015, bloated, and time consuming. Warp, on the other hand, is how payroll and compliance would work if Apple designed it: compliance is handled automatically, everything is optimized for speed (takes just 10 minutes to set up), and it’s sexy too. Consider moving to a payroll platform that values speed of execution and user
experience as much as you do.
Get started with Warp here.
