Congratulations to the Oklahoma City Council, which just passed a rezoning effort in order to greenlight construction on a 1,907-foot tower. Once completed, this will be the tallest building in America, roundly defeating One World Trade by 131 feet. But why is this happening in a flyover state rather than the nation’s de facto capital? Over the last two decades, New York high-rise developers have been hamstrung, partly out of well-intentioned, if totally misplaced, respect for the Twin Towers. But the quintessential American response to 9/11 would just be taller buildings, everywhere, and honestly fuck it throw in a space elevator my body is ready. Our new favorite politician is Ward 7 Councilwoman Nikki Nice, who said on Tuesday, “This is the moment we have all been waiting for, to see how tall we can get.” Which is honestly so beautiful. Thank you, Nikki, let’s see.

Fast food restaurants in California have reportedly slashed nearly 10,000 jobs as a result of the state's new $20 minimum wage, which went into effect on April 1. As a result of their brilliant plan to make sure burger-flipping high-schoolers could afford a mortgage, California had already watched several restaurants hike up prices in order to offset rising labor costs, including Chipotle and even low-cost favorite In-N-Out. Now, several of those restaurants are choosing to merely cut jobs altogether, opting for alternatives like automation (duh). I say keep at it, California. The faster your stupidity moves us closer to robot cashiers — and away from customers whipping out their camera at Chipotle to pressure workers into giving them fair portions for their $30 burrito bowl — the better.

Thursday, Trump’s appearance at David Sacks’ campaign fundraiser in SF prompted an epic street clash between hundreds — perhaps thousands — of MAGA-clad, flag-waving supporters, and a handful of counter-protesters. Or so we’re told by Chronicle columnists like Gil Duran (beat: “tech authoritarianism”), who warns of the “breakaway bloc of mercenary San Franciscans…increasingly aligned with [an] authoritarian criminal.” An intriguing bit of Trump Derangement headcanon, I’ll admit, though entirely unconvincing as a serious political claim. San Francisco remains the city where “conservative” just means “doesn’t think math should be illegal” and Trump is still discussed, unblinkingly, as the “grab ’em by the pussy fascist.” Duran and co. obviously know this, but play dumb because their actual aim is quelling the growing support for moderate policies. “Trump in SF” is their saving grace. Gird yourself — the meltdown has just begun.
