Following Elon Musk’s insistence he would permit political dissidents blacklisted by the Brazilian government to speak on X, the Brazilian government threatened draconian fines and lawfare which could result in X leaving the country entirely. With the names of the government’s targets still concealed, it’s impossible to fully understand the nature of this specific censorship, but given available details it seems likely this ostensibly “democratic” government has targeted its political opposition for silencing, once again underscoring any battle over “disinformation” is just a battle for power. Still, Brazilian politics is increasingly a choice between authoritarians, which means eventually Twitter, along with every U.S. tech company, will submit to the will of insidious foreign power or cease to exist there. Global tech is over. The future will be fragmented.

Our new deepfake-fighting cabal |
A “bipartisan” coalition of meddling elites, led by an organization called The Future US and backed by such figures as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has come together to fight deepfakes in the upcoming presidential election. A key figure in the organization is former Homeland Security chief of staff Miles Taylor, famous for writing an anonymous op-ed in the New York Times titled “I am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration.” In what world does an alliance between deep-state operatives and the British royal family help combat political “misinformation”? It literally sounds like a conspiracy theory. Not helping!

Total eclipse of America's heart |
Yesterday a solar eclipse slid across the country from Texas to Maine, attracting 5 million travelers and injecting $6 billion of eclipse-related spending into our economy. Why is a rare celestial event drawing so much attention? Well, it’s… a rare celestial event. Have eclipses ever not been popular? But I also think America’s starved for shared experience. Two decades ago, we were all watching the same TV show (Lost), but in today's hyper-personalized TikTok culture we spend hours a day totally isolated. As a result, the few stories we know for certain impact everyone stand out. Like eclipses and earthquakes. Thank God for natural disasters? We might just be one New Jersey volcano away from national peace.
