In advance of another chaotic hellscape election year, Meta just reduced the amplification of “political news” stories on Instagram. Desperate outlets like the Washington Post are trying to convince their followers to remove the embargo on their personal content preferences, opting back into “news” content. But of course nobody will, and this was all inevitable. Most content-moderation headaches stem from political news, and rather than cave to Canadian regulators or would-be censors, Zuck looked at the numbers, realized people only go to Instagram for butts, puppies, and food pics, and said “fuck it, let’s turn down the hysterical Palestine takes and woke whack-a-mole shit.” Bad news for the news business (please subscribe, my writers are hungry), but let’s be honest, this is probably better for the world.

Can’t stop the zuck truck |
A report in The Information reveals Zuckerberg is personally writing letters to AI researchers at Google to woo them over to Meta, and in some cases he's hiring them without an interview. Meta bought 150,000 Nvidia GPU's last year — more than Apple and Google combined, and neck-and-neck with Microsoft. For some reason, the industry has largely ignored Meta’s efforts in machine learning, but Zuckerberg is in the AI war to win, something we should've never doubted from a man who's named all three of his kids after Roman emperors.

It's 10 p.m., where is your child's VPN tonight? |
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a bill that will prohibit kids 13 and younger from creating social media accounts and require parental consent for 14 and 15 year olds. Sites containing a “substantial portion of material harmful to minors,” defined as more than a third of content on the site (meaning porn sites and maybe Twitter), will be required to verify user's ages. DeSantis and Co. are right to try to keep Floridian children from getting blasted with porn, but does anyone really believe that a generation of iPad kids won't find a way around this? They're firing up the VPNs right now!
