| What does it mean to be a saint? |
Saints are Jesus’ friends. They love and care for Jesus in their thoughts, prayers, words and actions. Saints believe all that Jesus taught, and they try their best to live his teachings. Saints are our friends too. From heaven, where they live forever with Jesus, the saints pray for us. By their lives, saints also show how to be the best friend to Jesus that we can be. |

As part of the Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Leo will canonize Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati on September 7. These two young men from northern Italy lived nearly a century apart, but they were united in their love for the Lord and devotion to the Eucharist. You can learn more about them below. You can also pray for them, and ask them for their prayers for your and your special intentions.

What small sacrifice can you make today for Jesus, as you remember his great sacrifice for you? Consider the plans you made for resting today. Is there anything your family could realistically sacrifice in order to do that? |

I'm positive that if I'd been there, I would have been cranky and hard to get along with.
Help your child make today's first reading (Numbers 21:4b-9) personal by talking about any long journeys your family has taken together. Who got cranky? Who complained? Most likely everyone did at some point. Ask: Who was Moses for us, reminding us that God is good? How did they do it? How might this help us next time we travel? |

Our first millennial-aged saint, Carlo Acutis loved soccer and gaming. But more than anything, he loved the Eucharist, calling it "my highway to heaven." After being diagnosed with leukemia, the teenager used his computer skills to create a virtual museum website of Eucharistic miracles. Carlo believed that the Eucharist helped us become more like Jesus and that it was a taste of heaven on earth. He died at age 15.

Pier Giorgio Frassati loved mountain climbing and goofing around with friends. When his friends began going their separate ways to college, he wanted to stay in touch, so he created a little group he called the Tipi Loschi Society. That's Italian for swindlers or "shady characters." The name was kind of a joke because Pier Giorgio often invited his friends to daily Mass and was always willing to share whatever he had with anyone in need. Pier Giorgio came down with polio in his early twenties, but even in his last moments, he helped get medicine to a poor man he had been caring for.

Praying for Our Newest Saints
Father, who has given us the ardent testimony of the young Saint Carlo Acutis, who made the Eucharist the core of his life and the strength of his daily commitments so that everybody may love you above all else, let him be counted among the Saints in your Church. Confirm my faith, nurture my hope, strengthen my charity, in the image of young Carlo who, growing in these virtues, now lives with you. Grant me the grace that I need. Amen.
Saint Pier Giorgio, teach me by your example of mercy to open my heart more widely to those in need, especially the poor and the sick. Guide me in extending that mercy both to friends and strangers, to those who love me and those who do not. Help me to reflect God’s own mercy, especially in words and deeds of forgiveness. Amen.
