DoSomething Members are Taking on Big Tobacco and Mobilizing to Decrease Teen Tobacco Use The tobacco industry has a history of using predatory tactics in order to hook Black, Brown, LGBTQ+, and low-income individuals on their deadly products. The tobacco industry’s impact on the planet and these communities is devastating.
Last week, a bipartisan coalition of thirty-one attorneys generals signed a letter urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help stop the surge of young people getting addicted to nicotine by eliminating flavors in e-cigarette and oral nicotine products that appeal to young people, limiting the amount of nicotine in products, and restricting marketing. All eyes are on the FDA in advance of its September 9th deadline to decide which products can stay on the market. You can take a stand against Big Tobacco by participating in Why We Should Care today.
And, young people are making their voice heard to take a stand against e-cigarettes, too. Nate, a former Juul user, reflected “While I can’t go back and change the past, I do know that there’s probably a lot of young people like me who still might have questions about vaping. So with that, here’s everything I wish my 13-year-old self knew about e-cigarettes.”
