New program alert! Just last week we launched Be A Voter Captain, our latest campaign to help you and others in your community claim our democracy. And just in time, because we are officially t-minus 7 days away from National Voter Registration Day! 

There are an estimated 8.3 million newly eligible young voters for the upcoming midterm elections. And with 60% of eligible voters never being asked to register, it’s on us to take action. We know that one of the first steps to claiming our democracy is registering to vote, so we’re giving you the tools necessary to embrace your inner “voting superhero” and help people in your community get registered! 

When you become a voter captain, you’ll join a collective of young people committed to celebrating our democracy in a fun and social way. We’ll provide all the information you need, including how to run and build a voter registration drive (both in-person and virtually!), gain community support, secure a location, and even pick a date. We’ll also provide a handy-dandy Voter Captain Toolkit filled with answers to all the questions you may have about running a successful voter registration drive! Our staff is also hosting voter captain trainings and workshops where you’ll have the chance to speak with a real-life person(!) to learn the basics on hosting your  drive and receive any–and all– the support you need. We recommend setting a goal of registering 30-50 new voters! 

And if making a difference in your community–and country–by helping others register to vote isn't enough, you’ll earn volunteer hours and the opportunity to earn a $500 scholarship when you become a voter captain!

Here’s what we know: 17 million young people will become voting age eligible between the 2020 and 2024 election cycles. However, many young people still question if their vote even matters–and rightfully so. As the face of our democracy becomes more diverse and reflective of the values of young people just like YOU, we’re proud to see our DoSomething members stepping up to claim our democracy this fall. 

“Registering voters matters to me because a lot of young people ignore their right to vote and I let them know without using their right to vote they don’t have a voice,” said DoSomething member Tellarie T., 20, who has already registered 16 of her peers to vote. “We should use our voting power to make a difference in what matters to us most.”

“For this upcoming election season, I'm not nervous. I will do my research and use my knowledge in order to vote for the best candidate. It will be my first year voting so I want to make it count. I want to know who I'm voting for and what they stand for. I plan to use my personality by keeping up to date with new information and organizing little get-togethers in order to discuss with the people I know and see if we have the same political views,” said DoSomething member Kaory F., 17. 

This election season, we’re on a mission to register 30,000 eligible new voters. As we gear up for National Voter Registration Day, ask yourself:

• Will you be a first-time voter in 2022? Hip hip hooray! Take 2 minutes and register to vote.
  
  
• Not sure if you’re registered? No worries. Take 2 minutes and check your status. Better safe than sorry, right?
  
• Have you moved recently? Take 2 minutes and register at your current address. 
  
  
• Already registered? Share this registration link to get friends registered
