Happy Tuesday and Happy Pride!!
Pride Month is here and so is our new program, #ProudandLoud: A Movement! We know that LGBTQIA+ rights are important to young people and we want to help you take action on the issues that matter most to you! In fact, 56% of young people identify with a new gender/sexuality or know someone who identifies with a new gender/sexuality in the past year. Also, 74% of young people who identify as LGBTQIA+ plan to attend a Pride Event!
Most of us know that Pride is a month-long celebration with fun and festive events and parades, but do you know the reason behind why it’s celebrated? Pride Month actually began as a celebration honoring the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City when police raided The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar that was- and still is!- a safe space for many in the LGBTQIA+ community. There were riots, arrests, and protests for LGBTQIA+ rights following the raids. This uprising sparked the gay rights movement and Pride Month, which is still celebrated today, more than 50 years later!
As we celebrate Pride and the LGBTQIA+ community, let’s work to learn more about the history behind the celebration and create spaces of inclusion. |

Check out what some of our DoSomething members said when asked why they celebrate Pride! |
DoSomething member Ruthanne Y., 19 said, “I can safely say that I would not be the person I am today without the influence of the LGBTQ community. It literally changed my entire worldview. It has allowed me to be a truer version of myself, accept and respect the many people in my life who are also queer, and influence other people in my life to be more open-minded. I am incredibly grateful for this community and would love to do anything to show my support and love for the people in it. Happy pride!”

“Celebrating pride is important because it's a way to come out and say, "this is who I am, I am proud of it, and no one can tell me otherwise", alongside others who have struggled the same way as well. I believe this organization is a wonderful platform to be able to speak out and feel supported!” said DoSomething member Maria B., 21. |
“All people deserve the same rights and protections especially in times of crisis like the current pandemic,” said DoSomething member Cole R., 30. “I'm glad people are helping spread awareness of the risks the LGBTQ+ community are facing.”
Join Ruthanne, Maria, and Cole today by sharing how you’re learning about and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community! |
