Hi DoSomething members,
Today (December 7) is the second day of Computer Science Education Week, and can we just say we’re geeked?! You might be scratching your head thinking, “hmm, what exactly is computer science?” Computer science is the study of computers--including hardware and software design, algorithms and the way we interact with technology. In simple terms, computer science is studying computers and knowing how they work! Computer science has helped progress the fields of math and medicine, build our phones, the internet, and your favorite video games, and it’s even helped design art. In our eyes, it definitely deserves a full week of celebration!
Let’s Do This! DoSomething
Here’s the problem: Students from communities underrepresented in STEM careers are often unaware of the plethora of STEM career opportunities available to them, beyond just the basics. They often don’t “see” themselves represented in the field, making them feel like they don’t belong.
Here’s where you come in: Take our quiz to educate yourself about what STEM careers best suit you based on your interests and personality! Be sure to share your findings with your friend(s) to activate them to find their dream STEM career too!
Check out these DoSomething members who have participated in the STEM Works For Me campaign. “This campaign is important to me because I know that there aren't as many women in STEM as there could be in the future. I think that because STEM is a growing field with the introduction of computer science, it could provide opportunities to a wider range of people,” said DoSomething member Sarah, 20. “I think that spreading the word about different job avenues will create more interest in STEM careers.” “I have always been interested in STEM and been aware of the disproportionate representation of women and people of color in the field. This campaign meant a lot to me because it allowed me to open up conversations with my mother, who was a biology major in college, about her difficulties,” said DoSomething member Charles, 17. “It also made me proud to support the educators of science at my school, the majority of which are women, and feel like in a way I was able to give back.” “Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I was younger, I always struggled with the question because I didn’t know. I definitely still don’t know now, although lately I’ve narrowed some of my possible considerations down, and a few of them involve the pursuit of a career in STEM,” said DoSomething member Jenny, 15. “When I found out about this campaign, it opened my eyes to the non-diverseness of the STEM field, which makes me want to contribute something to it- even if it’s just a small contribution!”
Join Sarah, Charles and Jenny in learning about a future career in STEM--all based on your passions and interests!
