Hey y’all,
Right now, thousands of folks in Texas are still experiencing water supply issues even after power was restored to most of the state. Here are a few different ways you can help Texans recovering from last week’s deadly winter storms.
Meanwhile, hate crimes against Asian Americans are on the rise in the US since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, including a recent string of violent attacks on elders in New York and California. You can help by donating to and amplifying the missions of these organizations that directly support Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
Let’s Do This!
February is Coming to a Close, and DoSomething Members Are Ready to Uplift Black Voices Year-Round This Black History Month, Black history has been rightfully revealed, remembered, celebrated, and made. Still, the country is confronted with racial disparities in COVID-19 vaccinations, disproportionate rates of unemployment for Black workers, and a serious lack of Black voices in youth literature.
To address the immediate and systemic issues that Black Americans face in their daily lives, we need to center Black perspectives and experiences now and every day. That’s why DoSomething members are seeking representation, getting informed, and uplifting Black voices year-round through our Diversity Book Club campaign.
“I am able to see and experience the racial injustices in school and in my state. I wanted to start my book club to help my generation be educated and educate the generations below us on injustice,” says DoSomething member Madison, 14. “Instead of minorities like myself being put down for looking a certain way, I want to help all citizens celebrate their races, culture, and lives.”
Seeing yourself represented promotes better learning and self-esteem, while reading books by or about other people from historically underrepresented groups builds cross-cultural empathy. DoSomething members have hosted 1,556 digital book club meetings in 2021 to discuss books by and about BIPOC.
“The United States is still significantly divided by race due to redlining and other historical events. Lack of knowledge about and communication with people different than oneself is prevalent, and this can cause fear and bias,” says DoSomething member Anna, 17. “To prevent this, it is important that everyone consumes media from different perspectives, and that can start with books.” Black History Month may be ending, but it’s never too late to celebrate Black authors and stories. Host your own Diversity Book Club to fight erasure and amplify unheard voices.
